WAL Get To Know: JENNIFER DESROSIERS
SIDE NOTE :
Emmy + I talk about Wild Adventurous Life...a lot! Whether we're cozied up at my kitchen counter, packed into her car with our gear, or chatting on the phone, building a healthier, stronger, bolder, more connected community is at the heart of everything we talk about. We want to provide the brightest spotlight we can to those who are dedicating their lives to living with their hearts wide open, as true adventurers. I don't know about you, but when I see people facing their fears and going straight toward them I get fired up. I want to know what fuels their minds, bodies, and their passion to keep moving forward. So, when Emmy proposed we do online interviews of the people we admire the most, of course I was all in! Then, somehow she convinced me to do the first one! So, here it goes....a little convo between Emmy and I. The questions were hers, the answers are mine. I hope you enjoy it!
WHERE DO YOU CALL HOME?
I live in a small town outside of Portsmouth on the Seacoast of southern NH. We moved there in 2014 when my husband and I simplified our lives and downsized our environmental impact by buying a "green" townhome. I know this sounds a little cliche, but I honestly don't identify with this as my home. Over the last 20 years, I've moved around ... a lot. Maybe close to 20 times. I don't have attachments to apartments or houses. I decided long ago that my home is within me and within the relationships with those that I love. As long as I'm with my husband and my pup, Zealand, I'm home.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE TO SOMEONE WHAT YOU 'DO'?
I'm a soul-based, passion-fueled entrepreneur. I'm on a mission to inspire others to "live vibrantly". To me that means living with my heart wide open in alignment with my true passions and having the courage to do the work in pursuit of my personal mission. I'm the founder of Laney & Lu Cafe, a vibrant food community cafe in Exeter, NH, and Wild Adventurous Life is my brainchild and I'm so excited to be partnering with Emmy on it.
WHAT DOES ADVENTURE MEAN TO YOU? HOW DOES IT SHOW UP IN YOUR LIFE?
Adventure is a state of mind. It's about approaching life with a willingness for exploration and a sense of curiosity. As we say at WAL, there is amazing freedom that comes from seeing life as an adventure rather than being attached to a specific outcome. I try to approach taking risks, making moves in my business, and facing my fears head on with confidence in knowing that whatever happens there will be a lesson. Ultimately, I will persevere and flourish.
DESCRIBE HOW YOU 'FUEL YOUR JOY'.
Making the leap from my corporate career to being an entrepreneur and pursuing my personal mission through Laney & Lu and WAL fuels my joy. Being witness to how these companies positively impact our communities has been incredibly rewarding and humbling. I am blessed to do this work.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE QUOTE OR MANTRA?
"Be the change you want to see in the world." -Mahatma Gandhi Although I understand that it's possible this is simply an interpretation of a longer quote from Gandhi, the meaning and intention of the quote remains the same. This quote serves as an important reminder to me to keep refocusing on that which is my most critical work, inner transformation. I need to embody what I want to experience in and infuse into the world.
WHO/WHAT INSPIRES YOU. WHY?
Where do I begin? I try to surround myself with people that exude love and positive energy, and with those that inspire me to up my game and be the best version of myself. I'm truly blessed to be aligned with a tribe of women that are contributing to their communities in very powerful ways. And, there is also not a day that goes by that I'm not truly humbled to be a part of Laney & Lu. Our team shows up everyday with complete dedication to our mission and core values. They are there for each other through thick and thin both in and out of the cafe. The way they step up for each other is tough to put words around, but it fills me gratitude. Last, but certainly not least, is my husband. He has an amazing calmness and simplicity to him. He keeps me rooted and feeling grounded during even the most intense moments.
CLOSE YOUR EYES AND IMAGINE YOUR PERFECT DAY. WHAT DOES IT LOOK AND FEEL LIKE?
This is such a difficult question because I love to do so many different things and seriously if I could snap my fingers to take away the hurt in the world, I would in a heart beat. How about this? Would it be possible to wake up in a tent, in the mountains, with all of my favorite people? We would make a huge breakfast, sip endless cups of french press coffee, and go adventure for the day soaking up the beauty of the world and the rays of the sun! We would end our day snuggling by the campfire, talking and laughing into the night.
WE KNOW THAT LIVING A LIFE FILLED WITH ADVENTURE AND JOY ALSO MEANS CHOOSING FOODS AND HABITS THAT NOURISH US. WHAT'S YOUR GO TO RIGHT NOW?
BREAKFAST: First coffee. I know it should be water, and I'm working on it. There is just something so cozy about that first cup of coffee in the morning. Then, two pastured eggs fried over medium in coconut oil.
LUNCH: I'm obsessed with a version of a salad that we had on special at Laney & Lu Cafe many months ago. It's called Purple Rain. It's spinach, kale, blueberries, shredded purple cabbage, shredded beets, pickled red onions, pepitas, hemp seeds, lemon tahini dressing, and avocado.
DINNER: Dinner is typically on the run depending on whether I'm staying late at the cafe, running to a yoga class, or off to a meeting. This past Monday night my husband and I had a quiet night in which was awesome. We baked wild salmon, sauteed dinosaur kale lightly in coconut oil, and steamed green beans. Heavenly. Oh yeah, and a square of dark chocolate for desert. I'm also enjoying a wasabi, ginger + sea salt bar that I got for Christmas from a gal pal. Yum!
DRINK: Water, herbal tea, turmeric latte, repeat. On the weekend, I might treat myself to a nice local IPA if I'm out with friends, but I don't drink alcohol all that often anymore.
SNACK: I'm not a big snacker, but lately L&L's Vanilla Protein Energy Bites have been my go to both before and after working out. If I'm super hungry between meals I'll grab the Sweet Green Smoothie!
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE TOOLS AND RITUALS?
WAYS TO MOVE: An inspiring and powerful vinyasa yoga class, mountain bike ride, or a long day hike! Right now I'm practicing with three of my favorite teachers: Julia, Jean, and Jo. I'm boxing at Ironman Fitness (hello abs!), and enjoying long trail walks with my puppy, Zealand!
OUTDOOR ACTIVITY: Oh gosh, yes! Anything. I love to be outside. Bring it on. Right now, because it's winter but the snow isn't great I'm loving long walks on the trails with Z and my hubs if we can sync up our schedules.
MORNING RITUAL: This is one area where I recognize I need to do some work. My 2017 intention is to develop a more mindful morning routine. I'm usually quick to grab my phone, check in with social media, and run off to the cafe. Now, I'm trying to design my mornings to include meditation, a walk with Zealand, and a planning session for the day. Oh, and a tall glass of water!
BEDTIME RITUAL: I love to get at least 30 minutes of snuggle time on the coach with my husband. I set my phone aside, grab a cup of herbal tea, and slow down. I'm almost always in bed by 9:30pm.
APP YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT: MileIQ for tracking business miles has been a game changer. Finding the time to sit down with a book is mostly impossible, but Audible keeps my mind nourished when I'm in the car. Mindbody because I love diversity in my workouts. I can sign up for a class, pay with a click of a button, and it automatically downloads it into my calendar. Progressive Alarm Clock for easeful, meditative awakening to Tibetan singing bowls.
GEAR YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT: This season I've been living in my new North Face parka, Laney & Lu trucker cap, and Lululemon lightweight mitts. I have a love affair for packs! I have far too many!
WHAT BRANDS ARE YOU CRUSHING ON RIGHT NOW?
Our "Innovator of Cool Stuff" at the Lu turned me on to doTerra EOs and now I'm obsessed with my passion and grounding blends. I'm not a big makeup person but mascara and lipstick - yes please!! I'm loving Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in matte finish. I'm constantly drooling over TheCabinChronicles on Instagram.
HERE AT WAL, WE BELIEVE IN MOVING BEYOND LIMITS AND PUSHING BOUNDARIES. IN WHAT WAYS ARE YOU CHALLENGING YOURSELF THIS YEAR?
2017 is about extending and expanding outside my comfort zone. Officially launching WAL was a huge leap forward and I look forward shouting our messaging from the mountaintops. Speaking of mountaintops, last year was all about developing Laney & Lu, and I put aside my asana practice and didn't make it out onto the trails hardly at all. This year, I want to finish the NH 4,000 footers (I only have 8 more), and I'm secretly (maybe now not so secretly) planning to hike the Long Trail in VT. I know that investing in my well being is crucial to the success of my businesses but that doesn't mean that it's easy to do!
