WAL Get To Know: EMMY KATZ
WHERE DO YOU CALL HOME?
You could say that I've done my fair share of moving the past few years (Berkshires, Boston, Portsmouth and now back to my roots near the Adirondacks in Upstate NY). I have become an expert at packing and unpacking a car. Through all of transitions (and many trips with Dad's truck) I've learned that home isn't about where I get my mail or park my car. It is about feeling grounded and surrounding myself with the people I love the most.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE TO SOMEONE WHAT YOU 'DO'?
In terms of my career, I am a Physician Assistant who practices Integrative and Functional Medicine in Upstate NY. We use a systems based approach to look at all aspects of a patient and their health. I believe true health is more than just a snapshot visit in a hospital or office setting, and to help patients we need to start from the ground up. I am also a Certified Holistic Health Coach for Emmy Katz Wellness, and co-founder of Wild Adventurous Life. My days are spent trying to help others feel their best: whether through my work as PA, or my work in empowering others to seek out adventure and joy in each day.
WHAT DOES ADVENTURE MEAN TO YOU? HOW DOES IT SHOW UP IN YOUR LIFE?
Adventure is the butterfly feeling of excitement in your chest that gets you out of bed before the sun rises and the rest of the world stirs. For me, adventure means allowing myself to experience something new. I know that when it comes to adventure, no matter what happens it happened because I gave myself the opportunity to say YES. Adventure is a choice.
DESCRIBE HOW YOU 'FUEL YOUR JOY'.
Fueling my joy means doing things I love, and making space for the people around me. I knew that two years ago I needed to make a change because I wasn't sleeping, and was having anxiety surrounding my career. With the help of my family and amazing husband I took a leap and I made a decision leave my job in Conventional Hospital Medicine so I could align my career with my values. And while transitions can be tough, I know that I am on my way to fueling my joy with my career. I like to think I fuel my joy with the little things as much as I do with some of the bigger decisions I have made. This may look like a B/spoke class with my sis in Boston, a trip to VT to hike with my best friends, enjoying a really epic smoothie, or visiting a new mountain with my husband.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE QUOTE OR MANTRA?
I have several favorites, depending on what is happening in my life. I can be a bit serious, and based on life experiences I've found that I'm not as lighthearted as I want to be. This year I am reminding myself to be playful, to laugh, and to choose joy. I love this quote as it is a gentle reminder for me:

WHO/WHAT INSPIRES YOU. WHY?
There are so many different individuals who inspire me. My parents are hands down the most hardworking people I know, and continue to inspire me every day. I can't imagine all the sacrifices they have made and continue to love and provide for our family. In terms of other entrepreneurs and adventurers: I am in awe of Yvon Chounaird, the Father of Patagonia, for his commitment to the dirtbag life and environmental ethics. I am also continually inspired by my tribe, my people: Jen Desrosiers my WAL partner for her ability to dream big, my best friend Kat for zest for life, and my husband for his ability to see the good in all things.
CLOSE YOUR EYES AND IMAGINE YOUR PERFECT DAY. WHAT DOES IT LOOK AND FEEL LIKE?
I thought this one would be easy but it is hard! There are so many directions I could go in. Okay, I am going to try. We would be in the Adirondacks at a cozy cabin. We would start by waking up early (since I don't sleep in (sorry Mike!)) and we would definitely get some form of movement in. Either Yoga on the dock by the lake with the morning mist or a morning hike and climb with the sun. We would sit on the top of the mountain and watch the sunrise. Then of course steaming mugs of coffee, delicious breakfast, and adventuring out for the day! Cycling, more yoga, swimming. That evening we would cook a big yummy dinner with our friends (who are obviously staying with us, along with our pup who is yet to be born- haha), and we would laugh, play games by the fire, and sing with the guitar. We would take our sleeping bags down to the dock and fall asleep snuggled together watching the stars and giggling like teenagers.
WE KNOW THAT LIVING A LIFE FILLED WITH ADVENTURE AND JOY ALSO MEANS CHOOSING FOODS AND HABITS THAT NOURISH US. WHAT'S YOUR GO TO RIGHT NOW?
BREAKFAST: I like to work out in the morning so I try to drink a ton of water because I know that I will be running around after that. Breakfast depends on what I am doing: smoothie, eggs with avocado toast topped with hot sauce and a little turmeric. If I am on the run to commute to see patients then it is often a banana and Lara bar. I like to have my coffee sitting down so that might be between patients at work, or on the weekends at our favorite coffee shop (preferably with Mike or a friend).
LUNCH: Something in a bowl over greens. This usually is leftovers which are incredible because they taste amazing the next day, and are a lifesaver when I have a busy schedule. Oh, and of course my bowl is topped with avocado.
DINNER: My go to dinner for the Winter time has been anything slow cooker style. We have had a lot of paleo chili, butternut squash soup (my parents have an amazing garden), zoodles topped with homemade meat sauce, slow cooker chicken with sautéed greens. I also have been loving Paleo Shepherds pie that I make with grass fed beef or organic chicken, and all the veggies-topped with whipped sweet potato...heavenly.
DRINK: Water, green tea, more water, sometimes La Croix or seltzer. I am really loving a tea called Amber Sun by Numi Organic Tea.
SNACK: Cut up veggies, nuts, crisp apple. In the evenings after dinner I usually have some sort of dark chocolate, or apple with cinnamon and nut butter or sometimes coconut iced cream. I love dessert!
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE TOOLS AND RITUALS?
WAYS TO MOVE: Hike, Cycle, Snowshoe, Yoga, Ski. Moving to NY from NH has me craving Jo's class on Saturday mornings and I am in the midst of trying new studios here in Saratoga to find what feels right! I can't get enough of Bspoke in Boston and when we visit we always go to a class. Don't ask me to choose a favorite way to move. When I am feeling good I want to do it all!
OUTDOOR ACTIVITY: I love going for a road ride on the ocean coast with my husband, and love to get a sweaty hike in. I also really like to walk my parent's trail system they have. Nothing feels more like home than that.
MORNING RITUAL: My morning ritual is to get some sort of movement in most days of the week. When I commute to work I also listen to podcasts (I can't get enough) and call my husband to say good morning.
BEDTIME RITUAL: Reading before bed is really grounding for me. I like to take at least 20-30 minutes to snuggle up in bed and read something fun (usually fiction) before I head to sleep.
APP YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT: Instagram. I love the images and inspiring content on it! Spotify for workout tunes, and Overdrive App that I use to download audiobooks from the library when I drive back and forth to NH!
GEAR YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT: Yikes. Hats, and anything Patagonia. I find they fit me well being petite and I love their mission and all of their gear. I am also always cold so layering is a must.
WHAT BRANDS ARE YOU CRUSHING ON RIGHT NOW?
I am crushing on Like A Mountain Girl on Instagram, and forever wearing Lululemon (my friend introduced me to the align pants and they are a game changer), and Eating Evolved Chocolate.
HERE AT WAL, WE BELIEVE IN MOVING BEYOND LIMITS AND PUSHING BOUNDARIES. IN WHAT WAYS ARE YOU CHALLENGING YOURSELF THIS YEAR?
This year began with a lot of NEW things: move to NY, WAL launch, Yoga Teacher Training, New job in Functional medicine. I am challenging myself by allowing things to happen as they unfold and not trying to micromanage everything at once (because it's a lot and I know will only drive me bonkers). I am also pushing boundaries by saying YES to adventures: to get out in the mountains, to make time for personal adventure and growth. I can't wait to see what the rest of the year will bring, because after all...we believe in living a #wildadventurouslife.
